I had to go back to windows as I just couldn't do the open source thing they way I wanted or thought might be possible. I suppose it was down to my ignorance of linux.

I'm still riding the open source train but will supplement it with the programs that simply do the bloody job without writing my own linux variant to do so. It has its place I guess but if you're trying to get things done, taking a break to learn some linux thing to do that, was interfering with my creative juices lol.

I'm getting into 3d printing in a way I hadn't expected and like many drugs I hope the novelty wears off soon as it's now another hobby/interest making demands on time I don't have already.

I need to get back to my Python Programming studies and my piano lessons now my car problem has been errr well temporally fixed.

I need to re-look at my Rockmaker maxscript along with a few others and make them more efficient.

Here's Paul Neales latest video from Pen Productions

I've slowly been changing over to open source software.

My laptop now duel boots into Linux Mint and Windows 8.1 and much of my image manipulation ie photoshop is now being done in gimp or another free open source piece of software.

I'm even learning Blender, but the reason for keeping things duel boot is because of running software that linux won't run (With the same reliability)

My car died and a lot of extra effort is going into raising enough money to repair or replace it, so I've lost my focus on this blog as it needs to be on the back burner until things get back to normal.

I need to add an updated demo reel, but I think it can wait as not much that I can show has been filmed. No one wants to watch me pull my hair out scripting lolLukethier & 3d Printinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01652248082007102682noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4480496176128868074.post-80799886077923327632015-05-08T11:54:00.000+10:002015-05-08T11:57:06.845+10:00Facial Rigging Bone BasedPublished on 7 May 2015
Here's the 3rd video ...

Hi, have you gotten all your xmas shopping done?! :)

First of all I just want to say thank you to everyone, this has been a huge undertaking and all of the hundreds of emails as well as messages across facebook and other social media has been amazing! I'm still replying to many comments, messages and emails so if I haven't responded yet I just want to say thank you right now, and I am getting to it! :)

I've already heard a lot of great stories of where these techniques I've shown you have been applied to many productions already, some of which I'm kind of jealous about because they're a few of my favorite movies coming out next year! But that is truly awesome!

Here's a link to the 3rd video

Download the files in the video

As you can imagine, gaining a solid understanding of developing tools for high end production you can truly push your career to an entirely new level, and that's what the entire experience is about, preparing you for 2015 and giving you the tools to transform your career and get much more stability in your career as well as financially, and really showcase a new ability that is in such high demand these days yet very few people tend to have it.

With FX, we have all learned to use FumeFX, Thinking Particles, Krakatoa, Particle Flow, Realflow, all the necessary tools but we haven't harnessed their real power and potential by being able to combine both our creative and technical abilities as one. If you could develop your own custom FX tools, automate what you do day to day, and typically do what most supervisors and leads do at the big studios - how would that benefit your career? How would that give you more confidence in your typical day to day projects as well as more importantly the future projects and studios you want to work with?

I know a few of you have already been jumping the gun asking about the course and both where to sign up, how much and also about licenses. I'll get to that shortly, I will say Cebas has been awesome in offering free Thinking Particles 6 licenses for everyone for the duration of the course (8 months), as well as the option to get a license beyond that for a discounted rate. So that is so awesome, I'm also close to getting licenses for everyone for Realflow too but that isn't finalized just yet. But that means for most of 2015 you'll have a license of possibly Realflow, FumeFX and Thinking Particles 6!

So that alone is super cool but I will have more information on this 8 month interactive mentorship program in the next and final video I'll be sending you, I will say that positions in this course will fill up fast so it's likely to be in the first 2-3 days so I'll just let you know to mark your calendars for 10am (Los Angeles time) Sunday, to look out for an email, I will be sending directly to you, last time I ran a course similar to this it sold out in just over a week, but this time around because this will be an interactive mentorship course, I am letting only a small number of people in, so it is guaranteed to fill up much faster than that. The FX mentorship is completely interactive and will go for 8 months so I imagine it will be quite a while before it's run again! So keep an eye out for the final video I'll be sending with more information on signing up for the course Sunday 10am LA time!

Thanks and I truly honor you for having the ambition to want to step your skills up and gain new abilities, I really value those who do have that motivation and hunger for success and it's far and few between - we're the ones who work the late nights and burn the midnight oil to be the best we can be and make our impression on the industry, so I want to congratulate you on this, it's definitely how I got to where I am, never giving up and total focus on hitting those goals! Keep it up!

Hi

So I 'just' put up the second video now. I think this for a lot of FX TD's is going to be something really cool and useful - I know because I rely on this technique ALL THE TIME in production. It's pretty much the backbone of how I light my shots these days and it's extremely powerful!

Here's a link to the video here in case you're in a hurry

The concept will be all about setting up a tool to automatically light your scenes for you based on the fire in your shot. As we all know fire is a light source and now we can actually use it to literally light our shots. To avoid any weird 'hacked' lighting to try to match what the effects are doing, as well as avoid wasting hours lighting our shots to mimic the fire.

More importantly it will teach you a lot of really powerful concepts:
How to automatically optimize your scene for rendering
Set up Global Illumination tweaked specifically for FX
Turn all your FumeFX grids off from being visible to camera but still visible to light calculation
Create new shaders for your scene
Re-path your render output and build directories specifically for rendering your interactive lighting pass out
Create a new 'ready to render' scene file with all of these changes
Build an interface to make it all a one click process, as well as having additional controls to adjust sampling and lighting strength for the shot
So there's lots of really powerful techniques we're building here, and we're definitely covering a lot of great material.

What I want from you is to start to think "what else can I automate in my day to day workflow?" What else is there that you do a lot of that could benefit from a bit of scripting and automation?

There is so much power by developing tools, and yes at first it all seems very intimidating but I want to show you how to build scripts to make your effects not only easier, faster but also better!

Check out the video here

Thanks again

I have ONE more video coming and this one's a big one! So get ready for this, in the meantime enjoy this video, I included the download link so you don't need to wait! ;)

It took me ages to understand how to best learn maxscript and it took jumping around from site to site and asking questions until the penny dropped.

If you have the money and want to learn maxscript then you need to do this course.Lukethier & 3d Printinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01652248082007102682noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4480496176128868074.post-38783406939710944432014-06-18T10:34:00.003+10:002014-06-18T10:34:51.504+10:00Create killer animation and 3D tools to work faster, better and easier in day to day production!http://www.tdtransformation.com/sp/27351-technical-director-transformation

The fact is that as artists working in 3D, whether it's in animation, modeling, rigging, lighting or even FX - we all can benefit drastically from ability to write our own 3D tools and automate a lot of the tasks that we do day to day!

Even simple things like having 3DS Max automatically update where it's saving out it's renders to, and render elements every time you save a new Max file, or automatically convert your renders to quicktime .mov files and upload to your dailies folder for review once your renders are complete. Building asset publishing systems, automatically light your shots, scale scenes or even launch photoshop or other tools from inside of Max! There are so many cool things we can do with 3DS Max, utilizing Maxscript that pretty much any artist is going to benefit from taking the plunge and learning these unique skills, that instantly set you aside from every other artist in your studio!

Typical courses like this you are expected to pay something in the price range of $3,500. AT LEAST! The course, going for over 14 weeks, with every week containg 5-6 lessons - I'll be honest, this course is insane! Every week receiving access to new videos, new content and mentoring from Allan McKay and even additional print-outs and other bonus gifts along the way! This course is by far the most robust course I've ever taught, whether it be online, or even private classes that I've taught at ILM, Ubisoft, Prime Focus, Autodesk, SIGGRAPH, or many other events. NOTHING IS LIKE THIS!

Here we are, video 5! The final video of this mini course. This lesson we begin to look at creating interfaces to our tools as well as property overrides for our FX, so that we can change the values of our FX rather than being limited to the settings we saved in our asset file!

We go beyond that by creating our own Playblast (Animation Preview) tool, so that we can create custom previews, but more importantly we use this in conjunction with various other tools we develop to be able to scan the scenes we generated previously and automatically generate previews of each! This way we can review the effects that were created for our shot, without ever needing to open each of the video files up - or for submitting to dailies for review.

This is the final video of our mini course, I hope you enjoyed it! This is just a taste of Technical Director Transformation - more information to come on this 14 week intense course, if you thought five videos was a lot, imagine what you can do with another EIGHTY HIGH-END VIDEOS over the span of 14 weeks of intense thorough training starting from the ground up!

Taking what we learned from the last video we take things to a whole new level in this video! We begin to construct intelligent tools that are able to scan our scene and collect all characters and begin to construct our effects automatically for us rather than needing to select a character to apply our effects to. Not only this, but we go further by making this tool literally assemble Max files for us of the effect applied to each character. There is a lot we cover in this lesson, it's definitely moving quickly into advanced territory so keep up!

Probably the most beneficial skill that every artist typically does not have, is the ability to write artist tools, build procedural pipelines and automate 90% of their day to day tasks. The general reason behind this is most artists think it’s not for them, they can’t learn it be cause they’re A) not good at math or B) don’t know where to begin. You’re wrong!

By the way, this is a FREE intense training course on MaxScript for pipeline and tool production, designed for ARTISTS.
This video will teach you how to go one step further, after we create our rendered image sequence
Dynamic Asset Distribution
FX! We take our FX assets and begin to develop it into a tool we can dynamically apply across multiple shots easily

This course is like no other, we take a crash course into developing tools that you can use right away in production TODAY to help make your work-life easier. As well as give you a greater understanding of how powerful developing scripts and tools can be, to go far beyond what your expectations probably are. This is designed for artists – by artists – to showcase the power of developing tools as a creative!

If you want to improve your career and increase your job stability, there is no other ability you should learn more than being able to code.

The possibilities are endless!

I also found out while my memory is a disaster on my meds my ability to think ahead seems to be ok as I found out I did have a backup of all my Coursea Homework..............go me! The only thing I lost was some time it seems. Woo Hoo.

Here is the final version of my fret calculator:

# From Stewmac
# To calculate the scale length for stringed instruments

# Notes on fret layout
# The most accurate way to lay out your scale is making all measurements
# from the nut (using the "fret to fret" distance only to confirm your layout).
# Laying out frets only by measuring fret to fret will compound error.
# For example, if you're laying out frets by marking with a scribe and your
# accuracy is plus or minus 2 millimeters, you could be off by as much as
# 24 millimeters at the 12th fret.

# Measurements are given from the end of the fingerboard (face of the nut)
# to the center of a fret slot.
# WRITTEN FOR PYTHON 3.3.2
It says it was counting to 100 and then going to restart but........it lied it never did, so as it was still under warranty Its now in the 2 to 6 week hands of the guys from where I got it. Needless to say the back ups I had been doing hadn't yet been updated to take these courses into account. I'd also been quite ill recently along with some other major stresses so I'll just wait till things settle down and start again.

I have my desktop still running xp so I can still do some things so here completely free of charge lol is my Python code for calculating the fret positions for stringed instruments. I'm not sure if this is the very latest version but its all I've got until my laptop comes home. Enjoy.
It will work in mm or inches
